Hazardous waste
Compliance software for hazardous waste carriers.
The consignment note is not administration. It is the thing that makes the movement lawful.

Hazardous waste is the part of the sector where the paperwork is the control rather than the record of it. A consignment moves with its documentation, the documentation has to be right, and a movement with defective paperwork is a problem in its own right regardless of whether anything was spilt.
The regime is also layered. Carrier registration, permits at both ends, consignment records, and in many cases transport rules that have nothing to do with waste law and everything to do with what is in the drum.
What that produces is an operation where a single missing field matters more than in any other waste business — and where the people most able to get it right are drivers working at a customer's site, in the weather, against a schedule.
The records
What hazardous waste carriers are answerable for
- Consignment notes and their references
- Waste classification and the codes applied
- Carrier registration and permits at both ends
- Vehicle checks, defects and inspection history
- Driver training and entitlement for what is carried
- Incidents, spills and near misses through to close-out
The problem
What makes this hard for hazardous waste carriers
Paperwork that has to be right, not just present
A consignment note with the wrong code or a missing field is not a filing error. The movement itself is affected, and the error is discovered by somebody with the power to act on it.
Several regimes on one load
Waste law governs the material, transport rules may govern how it moves, and permits govern where it can go. They are administered by different bodies and nothing joins them up for you.
Classification is a judgement
Deciding what a waste is, and therefore what applies to it, is technical work. It gets done once and then relied on repeatedly, which means an early mistake propagates through everything that follows.
Producers who do not know what they have
Customers hand over material described from memory or from a label that has fallen off. The carrier is the one who finds out, usually at the point of loading.
Incidents that are genuinely incidents
A spill is an environmental event with notification consequences, not a dented bumper. Capturing it properly at the time is the difference between a managed incident and a investigated one.
The answer
How WasteOptix helps
Paperwork that has to be right, not just present
Consignment records are produced digitally with the movement, so a note is complete and legible at the point it is created rather than corrected afterwards.
Digital transfer notesSeveral regimes on one load
Registration, permits and renewal dates sit on one calendar, so the authorisations a movement depends on are watched together rather than separately.
Compliance calendarIncidents that are genuinely incidents
Spills and near misses are captured from first report through to close-out, with the detail recorded while it is fresh.
Incident managementProducers who do not know what they have
Movements are scheduled and recorded per producer and site, so a customer whose descriptions are repeatedly wrong is visible as a pattern.
Rounds & schedulingClassification is a judgement
Records can be reported across periods and producers, which is what a regulator or an auditor asks for rather than a folder of individual notes.

Questions
What hazardous waste carriers ask
- Does WasteOptix classify waste or assign codes?
- No, and it should not. Classification is technical work that belongs to you and your technically competent manager. It records the classification and codes you apply, and keeps them with the movement.
- Does it handle consignment notes as well as transfer notes?
- Consignment records are supported alongside transfer notes. What a given movement requires remains your determination.
- Does it cover ADR or transport rules?
- No. WasteOptix is not a dangerous goods system and does not determine what transport rules apply to a load. It holds the waste records and the vehicle and driver compliance around them.
- Can we capture a spill properly?
- Incidents are captured from first report through to close-out with the detail at the time. Any notification you are required to make remains yours; the record supports it.
- Does it submit returns to the Environment Agency?
- No. It holds the records and reports on them. Submitting anything to a regulator stays with you.
