What is WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment)?
WEEE is waste electrical and electronic equipment. Its regulations place obligations on producers, distributors and treatment facilities covering take-back, treatment and reporting.
Much of it is hazardous — batteries, displays, cooling equipment and lamps all contain substances requiring controlled treatment — so it cannot be handled as ordinary commercial waste.
Distributors generally have take-back obligations when they sell new equipment, which is the part smaller retailers most often do not know applies to them.
Treatment must happen at approved facilities, and evidence of proper treatment is what supports a producer's compliance. That evidence chain is the reason destinations matter more here than for general waste.
What goes wrong in practice
- Electricals put into general commercial waste.
- Take-back obligations unknown to the distributor they apply to.
- Equipment given to an unapproved recycler, leaving no evidence of treatment.
