What is commercial waste?
Commercial waste is waste from premises used for trade, business, sport, recreation or entertainment. Businesses must arrange their own disposal and hold the paperwork for it.
The obligation to arrange disposal sits with the business, and it cannot be discharged by using domestic collections. That is the single most common compliance failure among small businesses, and it is one local authorities pursue.
A trade waste agreement with a collector is the usual arrangement, and it is the thing an inspector asks to see alongside the transfer notes it produces.
Home-based businesses are the awkward case. Waste from a business run at a residential address is still commercial waste, and the volumes are usually small enough that nobody thinks about it until asked.
What goes wrong in practice
- Business waste put out with household collections.
- No trade waste agreement in place at all, so no notes exist to produce.
- Waste taken home by staff for disposal, which moves the problem rather than solving it.
